Heterogeneous Networks: Deploying and Managing Small Cells and WiFi Offload

Course Objectives:

This is a 4-day course that will address the following topics:

  • Evolution from 2G, 3GPP UMTS and HSPA to LTE. Layer 1 and 2 protocol functions are dealt with (radio access and core network).
  • Different heterogeneous network architectures: macro cells, small/micro cells, femto-cells.
  • Outdoor and indoor small-cell deployments.
  • Hot-spot, high-capacity and extended-coverage deployments.
  • Interference issues.
  • Intra- and inter-technology handover issues between different network hierarchies.
  • Spectrum aspects (spectrum re-farming and new spectrum).
  • WiFi details and integration with cellular network.
  • WiFi off-loading criteria.

Course Overview
This course provides an overview knowledge of Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets) and offers participants a strong insight into complementary network features such as Carrier Aggregation, Coordinated Multipoint and Device-to-Device Communications (D2D). It gives participants a very good understanding of these topics which are state-of-the art, and will address various issues from different perspectives, covering practical, technical and business aspects. Furthermore, participants will also gain in-depth and updated knowledge pertaining to current as well as future networks.

Pre-Requisite for Participants:

A strong knowledge of wireless communication systems is required. Experience with 2G and 3G technologies is needed.

Who Should Attend?

  • Technical managers that want to learn and understand the benefits and potential issues with small/micro-cells, femto-cells and WiFi.
  • Technical managers that want to understand integration of 2G, 3G to LTE and WiFi.
  • Development, network and optimization management and deployment engineers that require a good working knowledge of multi-technology and multi-hierarchal networks.

Course Duration:

4 days

Course Outlines:

  • Introduction
  • UMTS and HSPA Overview
  • LTE Overview
  • WiFi Overview
  • Indoor Femto Cells
  • Outdoor Small/Micro Cells
  • WiFi Offloading
  • Wired Backhaul Overview
  • Micro-wave Wireless Backhaul for Small-Cells
  • Non-Line-of-Sight Backhaul for Small-Cells
