2G and 3G Network Quality of Service (QoS)

Course Objectives:

After successfully completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understanding GSM and UMTS/HSPA, including the motivation for its development, its early history, and its present capabilities.
  • Evolution from 2G to UMTS and HSPA. Layer 1 and 2 protocol functions are dealt with (radio access and core network).
  • QoS techniques to assess network performance.
  • Definition of 2G and 3G KPIs.
  • Methods for operator benchmarking and comparative analysis.
  • Quality is discussed from end customer perspective, i.e., Quality-of-Experience (QoE).
  • Intra- and inter-technology issues between different network hierarchies.
  • GSM voice, UMTS voice and UMTS/HSPA data usage scenarios will be considered.
  • Radio access and core network domains will be studies with respect to QoS.

Pre-Requisite for Participants:

A strong knowledge of wireless communication systems is required. Experience with 2G and 3G technologies is desirable.
